DKNY made its mark in sportswear in the ’90s, and their FW13 collection paid homage to that era. With a polished urban chic aesthetic, DKNY revved up brand staples by adding/mixing animal prints, topping looks with oversized bombers that were reminiscent of Starter jackets (remember those?) and infused classic colors throughout. Menswear pieces, dresses and accessories were “matchy matchy” – sharing an exact hue – which suited me just fine, as did the color blocked neoprene dresses and sweatshirts, and structured coats paired with beanies. The accessories were everything, and models carried leather and animal printed satchels with definite “IT” bag potential. Though the ’90s influence was heavy, the collection was far from dated. It did, however, incite me to hit a mean Bankhead Bounce for old times sake. I’d have loved to attend the show, just to see the reaction from show goers when the Notorious B.I.G’s “Juicy” blared. All the nostalgia made sense, as the brand recently re-released a few of their ’90s classics to be sold at Opening Ceremony. DKNY reminded everyone of the effortless cool that was ’90s street style in New York (before street style went commercial) with their modern interpretation.
