Paris Fashion Week – Fall 2011: Alexander McQueen

It has been over a year since the fashion world lost dear Lee McQueen. I had previously believed that no one could ever carry on his vision or aesthetics, and that the label should have just folded. I do feel differently about the situation now. Sarah Burton arguably has the most difficult job in the fashion-sphere right now. She’s had some pretty huge shoes to fill, but she has exceeded my and nearly everyone’s expectations.

I really enjoy the contrast between soft and hard for this season. Burton has described the collection as “icy” and I couldn’t agree more. The shoes are intense and S&M like, but they are balanced out by soft fur collars and hems. I am a little puzzled by the traditionally spring color choices (white, lavender, light blue) considering this is a fall collection, but it’s a McQueen collection, so those “rules” can not be applied here. These colors appear rather wintry pared with leather harnesses and lace-up platform boots. The collection was shown at La Conciergerie, where McQueen had shown a previous collection in which live wolves made an appearance on the runway. This may be a chilling reminder that McQueen’s spirit still looms.

Overall, this collection was very dark and asylum-inspired, offset but soft colors and furs. Two words: hauntingly beautiful. For Sarah Burton, things can only go up from here as she becomes increasingly more comfortable with the hefty legacy attached to the Alexander McQueen legacy and aesthetic.

Paris Fashion Week – Fall 2011: Haider Ackermann

Haider Ackermann is probably one of my favorites from the entire Fall 2011 season. I’d imagine I’d probably love it even more if I could see it in person. Why, exactly? Texture! This collection is a textile lover’s dream. I’m in love with the range of fabrics used and how well they all worked together. Glitter sequined gowns and satin should not look so great paired with loose, chunky knit sweaters and giant leather belts, but here they do.

The silhouettes and layering were near perfect in my eyes. The colors used were stunning as well. The bright shiny jewel tones didn’t seem overstated, but they still scream autumn.

There are rumors floating around that Ackermann may be tapped to replace Galliano at Dior. Karl Lagerfeld has also suggested that he would want Ackermann to replace him when he decides to retire from Chanel. The fashion world has their eye on Ackermann, as they should. I hope others follow suit soon.

I really wish I could say more, but I don’t think my words can do Ackermann’s Fall 2011 collection justice. I’ll let these pictures do the talking.

New York Fashion Week – Fall 2011: HVS, House of Versatile Styles

The third and final show I had the pleasure of attending was House of Versatile Styles (HVS) by Bukola Are. Instead of a traditional runway show, Are opted to show her collection in the ever-popular “presentation” style. More designers are catching on to this method, as it allows the attendees to really see the clothes up close and personal. This worked in Are’s favor because this collection was all about details and texture. Are used fabrics that were inspired by her travels, such as satin lame, swiss lace, and sequence prints from West Africa. I can also see subtle influences from decades past, namely the 60s and 80s. Much like Keo, this collection is dripping with bold colors and is also not for those who want to play it safe.

For this presentation, HVS partnered with FSL cosmetics and Olas Handbags. The models wore a shade of FSL lip color created exclusively for HVS inspired by the fall collection dubbed Purple Goddess. All handbags used in the show were made by Olas Handbags and were meant to compliment the clothes and accessories in the presentation.

Unlike the previous shows I attended, I was able to take more photos at HVS due to the style of presentation. Here are the highlights:

New York Fashion Week – Fall 2011: Keo, “Sexy MF”

The second show I attended for New York Fashion Week was by a newcomer by the name of Keo. This was the debut collection from the 22 year old designer. It was by no means safe, and I wouldn’t have it any other way! The collection, dubbed “Sexy MF” after the Prince song of the same name, was inspired by the Purple One himself and the excess of the 80s, but with a modern 2011 spin. Keo is fearless and did not shy away from bright colors, lingerie, loud prints, and metallics. These clothes are not for the faint of heart, they’re designed for confident women who command your attention! This was an ambitious effort for a debut, so I can only imagine that future collections by Keo will continue to blow away her audience and critics!

Keo also used the show to raise awareness for the S.L.E. Lupus Foundation and the Epilepsy Foundation of Metro New York. Keo suffers from both Lupus and Epilepsy, but don’t think that she lets these conditions hold her back. Despite numerous hospital visits and extreme fatigue, she was still able to put on an impressive debut show.

The Juice: Vivienne Westwood + Herve Leger Back On the Runway!

I’M BACK LIKE I NEVER LEFT BATCH.

Fashion Icon/Designer Vivienne Westwood is to return to the London catwalk – after almost a decade away. The eccentric British designer will show her Red Label women’s wear collection for autumn and winter 2008 at London Fashion Week next February (08). Westwood – who last showed her collection at London Fashion Week in 1998 – says, “The sales of all our lines are increasing and we decided that Red Label, which is successful worldwide and so popular in the U.K., should have its own show.” She follows in the steps of designers Matthew Williamson and Luella Bartley, who both returned to the event this September (07) after several years away.

Recently revived iconic 1990′s fashion label Herve Leger is set for a catwalk comeback next year, when U.S based French designer Max Azria sends his new designs for the house down the runway for the first time since the mid nineties. “I’ve spent the last year focusing on redesigning and reinventing the brand, while staying true to the house’s heritage,” he said to fashion industry insiders WWD recently. His designs for his own collection (pictured) are usually hippy floaty numbers, while Herve Leger is famously all about body con, bandage-esque tight lycra.

FIRST BITE: FASHION WEEK DAY 3 !

FASHION WEEK DAY 2 RECAP:
Another great day of fashion I must say. I can barely wait for the pictures to be posted after each show, that`s how stunning the designs have been so far. My standout collections would go to Lela Rose (who also debuted her shoe collection with Payless) who’s dresses & gowns were simply sleek and timeless. The color choices, fabric choices and cuts were all on point. I loved it. Carlos Miele had a sexy collection of dresses as well. (It must be the year of the dress?) Hotness. I also adored Bill Blass’ collection. Another collection of gorgeous knee-length and floor-length dresses with amazing detail. Gorgeous. Gottex! This swimwear collection was beyond hot. It made me want to get back in the pool again, just to show off one of these fierce bathing suits. Loved it! Now on the flipside, there were a couple designers I was noticably disappointed with. Miss Sixty was the first out of the bunch. I was not impressed with this collection. I’ve seen Miss Sixty at previous Fashion Weeks and seen much better from Wichy. Badgely Mischka also disappointed me with their collection. At the Miami Fashion Week back in May, their gowns were mesmerizing so I was expecting way more from them. The designs this time around were rather plain.
